Frank dropped by Henderson’s after lunch the next week. Since it was Friday, he didn’t have any afternoon surgeries scheduled.

Amanda wasn’t there, so he spoke to the owner instead. Britt Henderson wasn’t pleased that he was cancelling his contract, even though he was going to pay for the entire term.

He said, “I’d like to give a bonus to Amanda, if I could.” As a single mom with an autistic child, she could use extra money.

“Yes, of course.”

As he walked out into the reception area, he saw an attractive woman with long light brown hair talking to a man in a suit. She wore a short skirt and he glanced at her legs a second time. They looked familiar. He looked more closely at the woman. “Jacey?”

She looked flustered. “Yes.”

He couldn’t believe it. What was Jacey doing at Henderson’s?

She didn’t look anything like herself. She was wearing a brightly colored floral dress without her usual lab coat or jacket, which showed off her excellent figure. And she was wearing noticeable make-up with pink lipstick. “What’s with the hair?”

“Excuse me,” she said to the man sitting next to her and glared at him. She picked up a purse and gathered a stack of papers as if she was going to leave. Was she wearing nail polish, too? He felt as if he had stepped into an alternate universe.

“This was a mistake,” she said clearly.

“Do you know each other?” the man next to her asked.

“We work together,” Frank said quickly. If Jacey had signed up with the dating service, he didn’t want to mess up her chances. Although, he thought critically, she could do a lot better than the bloated business man who was watching her with an appreciative eye.

Jacey left the reception area. She pushed through the large glass doors and Frank followed after her.

She walked toward the elevators, pushed a button and stood, waiting.

Frank said quickly, “I didn’t mean to scare you off. You stay; I’m leaving.”

“No, I should have known better than to use the same dating service you were using.” She adjusted her purse strap on her shoulder.

“You’ll have it all to yourself. I actually cancelled my membership today. ”

Her eyes narrowed. “Why?”

“I can’t find what I want.”

“But I thought – you and the dog lady?

“No,” he said flatly.

“I’m sorry.”

“I’m not. I feel relieved actually.”

“Then I’m glad.”

“But you – why are you here?” He supposed that was a stupid question. “You want to find someone.”

She nodded. “At Emma’s party, I realized how lonely I’ve become. Seeing you with Emma and Sophie triggered my maternal instincts.”

“You want a family?”

“I’m thinking about it.”

He couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

She added, “Although I think an older man with grown children might be best. An older, successful man is less likely to be intimidated by a brain surgeon. And if his kids have kids, I could be a grandmother instead of having to be a mom 24/7. That might be easier.”

“You’re too young to be a grandmother.”

She flipped the ends of her fake long hair.
